Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) New Graduate for a nursing job in Clackamas, Oregon.

This position allows applicants to apply to all hospitals in the Kaiser Northwest Region with our Sunnyside and Westside Medical Centers for the February, 17th 2025 cohort of the Nurse Residency Program. 



  • Applicants accepted into this training position will enter the KPNW Nurse Residency Program. 

  • Before applying, please read all the following information carefully. NOTE: This position is only for nurses with less than 6 months of paid RN work experience. 

  • During the interview process applicants will have the ability to indicate which hospital(s) and unit(s) they wish to apply to.

  • Program Eligibility: 

    • Nurse Residents (new graduate registered nurse)

    • Active Oregon Nursing License upon hire 

    • Associate, Bachelor, or Masters degree in nursing 

    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing 

    • 0-6 months of paid work experience as a registered nurse  





  • Program Components: 


    • Clinical orientation program 


      • Clinical training: The first several weeks are predominantly classroom experiences, consisting of live, in-person and virtual classes. Classroom education courses are taught by Kaiser Permanente Nursing Professional Development Consultants and Subject Matter Experts that incorporate lecture, simulation, skills labs, and other experiences to support the RN resident’s transition to the practice of nursing.

      • Classes are held during daytime hours.

      • Preceptorship: The RN resident will be paired with an RN preceptor during the competency-based orientation and will work the preceptor’s schedule. This may be days, evenings, or nights.


    • 12-month Professional Development Program 


      • Attendance and completion of the professional development program is mandatory for Nurse Residents 


        • Supports peer-based learning across clinical specialties 

        • Requires the completion of an Evidence-based Practice Project 


      • Upon completion of competency-based orientation, the RN resident will enter mentorship with an experienced RN.

      • RN residents will be required to fill out anonymous surveys to measure your transition-to-practice experience. 





  • Program Time Commitment: 


    • Attendance at all clinical and classroom activities is required.

    • The RN resident refrains from scheduling time off (except for protected leave such as FMLA or other protected leaves) during the training program  




  • Travel: 


    • The medical center hiring the RN resident will be the primary CLINICAL training location.

    • During training, the RN resident may be required to attend class, shadow, or visit another Kaiser Permanente department or campus.

    • Travel will vary and may be eligible for reimbursement.



New graduate nurses are enrolled in a medical center evidence-based residency program. The program is designed to meet individualized orientation needs of the new graduate registered nurse who desires to work in an acute care hospital setting. Under general guidance of a trained preceptor new graduate nurses will collaborate with other members of the health care team, learn to use clinical judgment skills to diagnose and treat human responses to actual or potential health problems. New graduate nurses will assume responsibility for assessing, planning, directing, providing and evaluation nursing care for patients and coordinating nurses care activities with other health care disciplines prior to completion of the clinical portion of the residency program. 



Essential Functions:
• Assessment: standard of performance: Performs accurate multi-system assessments, including; biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, education needs and discharge planning needs. Identifies deviations from normal on routine lab diagnostic tests. Reassesses patient throughout hospitalization. Performs complete discharge assessment.
• Planning: standard of performance: Develops an individual nursing plan of care. Nursing plan of care is sensitive to the developmental needs of the patient. Coordinates patient care activities and discharge planning with other hospital and clinic departments and community agencies. Develops patient teaching plan and documents on care plan or teaching plan. Appropriately delegates patient care activities based on patient's condition and scope of practice of other health care providers. Established priories for patient care. Classifies acuity level of assigned patients.
• Implementation: standard of performance: Initiates appropriate measures based on protocol for the management of the medical and/or surgical patient. Bases nursing care on protocol in place for management of each patient. Correctly carries out the physician's plan of care. Accurately documents in the EMR. Documents care according to policy and procedure. Utilizes a multidisciplinary approach when appropriate. Performs all necessary procedures correctly. Utilizes available teaching plans in addressing patient teaching needs. Accurately calculates and administers medications. Initiates appropriate measures in emergency situations.
• Evaluation: standard of performance: Evaluates assessment methods, plan of care, and patient's response to treatment. Participates in unit quality assurance activities.

Education
• Graduate of any age or background of an accredited nursing program.


License, Certification, Registration
• Current Oregon or Washington RN license in state where assigned required upon hire/transfer.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required upon hire/transfer. 



Additional Requirements:
• Successful completion of the selection process which will include but not limited to a behavioral interview, passing the pre-selection clinical and customer service assessment and at least a successful or higher rating on the most current performance evaluation from a current job position.
• Computer keyboarding skills.



Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field.
